Sinatra is an Arabian gelding who was rescued in Fall 2017 from a friend facing hard times. At just 2 years old, Sinatra and two other horses from the same situation had been starved for months. Sinatra had been confined to a filthy stall, where his desperation for food led him to chew through the wooden walls. His dark color and poor lighting made his emaciation difficult to fully capture in photos.
Upon arrival at Eden Healing Center, Sinatra began a thorough rehabilitation process. We dewormed him and took all the rescued horses to UW-Madison Veterinary School for dental examinations. The vets were shocked by the severity of Sinatra’s dental issues. His teeth had sharp points that felt like crocodile teeth, causing him extreme pain. This was surprising given his sweet demeanor.
Sinatra’s condition was so severe that he was referred to Dr. Henry, a top equine dental surgeon in WI/IL. Despite a long waitlist, Dr. Henry prioritized Sinatra due to the urgency of his case. Sinatra’s two-year molars were severely deformed, likely due to poor nutrition in utero. One of the molars was infected, leading to significant pain and skull remodeling. Dr. Henry even had his intern write a college paper on Sinatra’s case. Without intervention, Sinatra would have died from the infection.
Sinatra underwent surgery to address the infection, including a lavage catheter for saline flushes over six weeks, and later, a more invasive surgery to remove residual infection. His recovery has been remarkable. Sinatra now enjoys a happy and full life, with regular dental exams and teeth floats to maintain his health.
Sinatra’s gentle spirit has endeared him to our family, particularly our oldest daughter, who calls him “her horse.” He participates in events like the Walworth County Fair speed shows, and continues to be a beloved member of our program.
